I'm Director of Communications at The Open University, writing here in a personal capacity.

Pictures can be evocative, and capturing memorable moments builds a sense of identity and connection. My aim for 2014 is to maintain both my personal blog (see link below) and this blip blog, sharing what is important to me and could be of wider interest.

One of the great things about my role is championing the OU, one of the world's greatest inventions and innovations. Few universities can claim to be excellent and inclusive. Higher education institutions have a critical role in liberating human potential, enabling social mobility and contributing to a prosperous and sustainable economy. I want to build the OU's reputation for world-class learning, teaching and research.

I was drawn to the OU after a long career spanning 17 years in media, 10 years in government and some time in private sector consultancy.

A champion for cross-sector collaboration, I have also enjoyed leading three civil society organisations over the past 15 years. Causes have included promoting the interests of freelance cameramen and women, supporting organisations through change, and building Liberal Judaism, a progressive national movement.

Being at the OU has refreshed and revitalised my leadership and communications skills. During a 30 year career, I have worked for top organisations - BBC, ITV, British Government, Marie Curie Cancer Care, the OU, to name a few. Through effective communication, organisations can change for the better and be an influence for good.
