Born & raised in Shetland (from many generations of Shetlanders) and still have our family house and connections there. After turning down a place at art college in the late 1960's I studied science at Edinburgh University, did a year's postgraduate in Newcastle, then returned to Edinburgh as a research scientist with the Scottish Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) where I also completed a PhD (in cellular immunology). I have had an enjoyable career as an increasingly senior biomedical research scientist in SNBTS, worked with some great folk and international collaborators (publ G.R.Barclay), with opportunities to attend conferences around the world. Now I have retired I am reviving my interest in art, but am a lazy sketcher so "sketch" with a camera (and sometimes just take pictures). I like outdoors, wildlife, sailing, folk & alternative (world) music (& jazz/blues) - play a little, reading, most science, etc. - and especially Scotland & Shetland. Live in Midlothian now, just outside Edinburgh. Tweet at @Hjetlandi
