Hoary-headed Grebe

Day 13 Hoary-headed Grebe

The hoary-headed grebe (Poliocephalus poliocephalus) is similar to the UK's little grebe but just a little larger. It was very timid, staying at the far end of the pond while it was aware of my presence a couple of days ago. This morning I approaced the pond through woodland and remained partially hidden between a gum tree and a cypress. That seemed to have the required result of hiding me but rather restricted my view of the water.

The grebe was diving for food and making roughly circular tours of the pond so it passed me just 3 times in an hour. This was the best that I managed.
