Jarvisness

The Bowlo

Australia is a land of renovation, and few vestiges of Jarvisness remain. Homes, shops, bars - nothing is safe from the all-consuming "reno", and many once-soulful establishments now have the ambience of a bad airport bar (not that there are many good airport bars) or are simply closed down. The Melbourne beachside suburb of St Kilda has been especially ravaged by renovation, and one of the few bastions of resistance is the St Kilda Sports Club, aka The Bowlo. It's a heritage-listed bowls club inside a wonderful century-old building, and the most modern thing inside it is a defunct pinball machine. As a sports club it is licensed to sell cheap booze, it is open to non-members and it puts on great live music every weekend. Here we see the renowned barroom philosophers Steve and Taxi Keith (Jarvises both) at the bar, which is their natural habitat. Steve is that rarest of creatures - a Jarvis who does not drink.
