Tatra Mountains--Evening

These are the Tatra Mountains, seen at the very end of a long, hazy day in southern Poland. If they look ethereal, that's the way they were.

We awoke in Paris at 4:15 to catch a very early flight to Krakow, and were met by a birding guide whom we had engaged to take us birding for two days in southern Poland. We were in the field three hours to the south by 2 pm, searching mainly for Pygmy Owls in a series of meadows bordered by forest (mainly tall evergreens). No luck on the owls, though lots of other birds.

We drove to a much hillier walk, mainly for woodpeckers--there too not much luck. But walking back to the car I captured this view, through the haze.

Backblipped the next day (2011-3-22)--for success with a pygmy owl see the next day!

The Tatras are the highest mountain range in the Carpathians, forming a natural border between Poland and Slovakia.
