Café Vaudeville, Belfast

I was up and about quite early and got some work done before downing tools at 11.00 and setting the client straight about not being available for the rest of the day. Today was the day I joined two other members of the Music group and went up to Belfast to see a performance of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes (Opera North touring from England). Arrangements had been made months ago and tickets purchased well in advance. We had hoped for a better turnout, but as it turned out just the three of us worked out really well and we had a terrific time.

Two of us drove to meet Paul who'd offered to do the driving and left our cars at his place. We left there at 1.00 pm, got to Belfast at 3.00, wandered a bit until 5.00 looking for somewhere to grab a bite toe at to fortify us for the opera, and finally stumbled on Café Vaudeville, a splendidly over-the-top, high-camp spot which instantly took our fancy. The menu was good, time was pressing, so we stayed for a cocktail and food, finishing in comfortable time to get to the Opera House by 7.00 and have leisurely drink before taking our seats. So, if you thought Dylan's Hotel yesterday was tacky, I think it's safe to say that today's venue outdoes it. (Incidentally, if you're sufficiently eagle-eyed you can spot Paul and Dermot sitting down studying menus.)

The production was excellent, there was some fine singing, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the musical experience. The programme mentioned a finishing time of 10.15, but it was ten to eleven by the time we clapped ourselves out, picked up our coats and decided to head straight back to Dublin. We got back to Paul's place just after 1.00 am, 12 hours after we started. A great adventure, a wonderful change from the normal routine, and a pleasant break for me from the work pressure of the last few days. It's back to the grind tomorrow, though. Down to earth again with a thump.
