The Upper Tay Estuary

Work took me today to the south side of the River Tay, near Abernethy. This shot is from a hillside above the village, looking west up the river. Ben Vorlich and Stuc a Chroin are just visible on the distant horizon; Munroes that I climbed about 15 years ago. The hill with the yellow fields of oilseed rape on its near slopes is Moncreiffe Hill, and River Earn flows into the Tay just this side of the nearest of the rape fields.

The Tay was once a vital transport link to Perth, which still boasts a harbour in the city centre that receives occasional cargo ships. Ironically, given that much of Perthshire boasts wonderful forests, many of these ships are bringing timber from Scandinavia.

There is no real substitute for sunshine and a clear day to bring a wide landscape to life.
