Lake Windemere at Ambleside, UK

Ambleside is at the north end of this lovely lake in what is called The Lakes District in the central west part of England.

There's lots of information on the internet about the geology of this interesting part of the UK.

I stayed at a youth hostel and had a sweeping view of the lake and small marina from my room. The hostel (the large building in the center of the photo behind the boathouse) was built originally as a short string of hotels, and one part is still up for sale. The YHA is an amazing enterprise all over the UK! While there are a few private rooms, mostly there are 3,4, and 5 bed dormitories, separated as to gender. The cost is low, the food is good, local ales and ciders are available, and the camaraderie of spending a night or two in the company of other adventuresome souls is very stimulating.
I stayed in hostels for four nights and met all kinds of people from all over the world. Hikers and walkers, bicyclists, and bikers, art enthusiasts, history buffs and people like myself who just wanted to see the sights and have a cozy night's sleep.

More dramatic large!
