Besides You in Time

Evening all,

Hope you've all had a good Sunday.

Had a good swim this morning, then when the weather brightened up this afternoon i thought i'd pop out for a quick geocache and have a look at this beautifully sad and poignant little memorial which is slightly hidden in the woods near Silkstone.

Its one of three around Silkstone dedicated to the memory of the 26 children who lost their lives in the Huskar Pit Disaster of 1838, when a dayhole that they were trying to escape from became flooded.

Its a very sad and terrible tale, sadly one that was not uncommon for children working down the pits, albeit a slightly unique set of circumstances.

It was widely reported both locally and nationally and was one of the triggers that led to the reformation of the laws governing the working conditions of children and women in the mines....

It is still recognised and remembered in the village, and while i was there today i noticed some recent handwritten notes from local children, who had rather touchingly and innocently written things such as " i am very sorry that you had to die" and " we havent forgotten you all", and the memorial stands untouched and in good order....
