Happy Himmelfahrt

Apologies for the German/English title there but I like alliteration. Today is Himmelfahrt or, as it is known in English, Ascension Day. It's a public holiday here and it is marked by the first day of the Wilhelmstraßenfest. This is a big party in the centre of town where they close down most of a really busy street and cover it in bars and food places.

Essentially it means that you wander down, check out the stages (in the afternoons it seems to be Tanzschule (Dance Schools) putting on shows that have been choreographed. Just not choreographed that well) and meet friends. It's all quite good fun. It goes on for three days. i'm not sure that if I was booked into the the really expensive hotel here, I'd be all that pleased at the fact there were 50,000 people partying hard outside well into the night.

We took a stroll round, caught a bit of sunshine and then decided a glass of sparkling stuff would be a very nice treat. I think the flowers in this are a Helliconia of some kind.
