On My Doorstep

The Veterans

Over the years, one way or another, we have inherited and kept a lot of walking sticks, as you do. I was sorting them out yesterday and decided some needed to go. My thoughts turned to village history ....

In 1927 a cricket team of veterans from the village issued a challenge in Yorkshire newspapers to any village which could field a similar team for a match.

With no member less than 70 years of age and including a reserve and an umpire, the total age of the prospective village team was 995 years. Newspaper photographs showed the team practicing with walking sticks for stumps, hence the recreation here.

As it happened, the challenge was accepted and two matches were played both of which we lost. Lots of photos were taken which remain until today.
