Yesterday, we left the Hermod and proceeded to Las Palmas for fuel and maintenance on our towing arrangement. Using strong wires also means you have to use strong and big connections. In earlier days, tugs had steelwires with eyes spliced in them. The modern and heavier tugs use heavy wires, so heavy that it is almost impossible to splice them anymore. That's why we use sockets. You can see a three inch specie on the picture. The end of the towwire in guided into the bottom side of the socket. Then a sort of two component resin is poured on top into the socket and after curing time the towing connection is ready for use again. On the picture you can our Bosun checking if the resin is hardened sufficient. To be honest: I have absolutely no clue what our A/B Joseph is doing with his hammer here.
