Blackhouse

Blackhouses were the traditional living place in the Western Isles. They are very warm 
and cosy having very thick stone walls, small windows and a thatched roof with rocks 
and planks roped on to hold the thatch down. Lewis is covered with remains of 
blackhouses, most of which are now just shells but some of which have modern roofs 
put on to make sheds. On the west of the island in Gearrannan is an entire village of 
preserved Blackhouses. They were used up until relatively recently when the elderly 
residents were moved into council houses. I feel a bit sorry for them having to move 
into a dull council house from their cosy dwellings but I suppose keeping up a
thatched roof becomes a bit of a trial when you are 80. I hope they were happy with 
the arrangement.
