Clear

This is or rather was the village of Stiomrabhaigh. In 1851 it had a population of 81 
but just 7 years later had a population of 0 having been cleared to make way for 
sheep. However the residents had simply accepted crofts in nearby Leumrabagh 
instead and so were not chucked out in the brutal way usually associated with the 
Clearances. In fact Lewis was suffering badly from overpopulation at that time and 
the landlords were having trouble themselves keeping a sick and starving population.
Many people were actually glad to leave and try and find a new life for themselves 
elsewhere.

In fact Stiomrabaigh was resettled a few decades later since despite the clearances,
Lewis was still suffering from overcrowding but the familes there found it too difficult 
a place to live in. We walked in to it in about a hour over the moors but it is difficult 
terrain and the village is really only accessible by sea. Stiomrabaigh was deserted
again by the end of the 1940s up to this day. Apart from the sheep.

We also saw two Golden Eagles soaring above which was a lovely sight.
