Small tortoiseshell butterfly

We are being asked to do a butterfly count later this month. There is concern that some of our varieties are in decline and to lose these magnificent creatures would be a tragedy.

The small tortoiseshell looked dramatic against the plants.

There was also a green veined white

This was not far from the white and poppy field

And there were plenty of hoverflies on the thistle
