As we all know, people could spell properly in the good old days. But there again, perhaps they couldn't.

Someone's attempt to scratch LA FRANCE onto the church wall at St Cyr De Salerne, Normandy, back in 1771.

Little could they have dreamed of the momentous events that were to change the lives of everone in France, just 18 years later.
