Ventilation Shaft No.3

Another day of meetings in London and a bit more exploration of the Rotherhithe river front. This circular red brick structure with elaborate wrought iron work is one of the ventilation shafts for the Rotherhithe road tunnel that links docklands with the Rotherhithe peninsula. The tunnel was completed in 1908. On the side, partly hidden by bushes, is an inscribed stone tablet commemorating the 16th century voyages of Willoughby, Borough and Frobisher whose search for the fabled north-east passage had started at tis point on the Thames.
