The Top of the Rock

Today we got our vertigo on atop the Rockerfeller Center's observation deck.
Known as 'The Top of the Rock' it's approximately 850 feet high and offers a 365 degree view of the city.
Ideally placed, you can take in the Empire State Building and the iconic cityscape at the front, plus the almost surreal-looking green giant of Central Park out back.

The Rockerfeller Center officially opened in May 1933, built by the Rockefeller family in space leased from Columbia University. The construction project was vast, providing over 40,000 jobs in a time of economic crisis, showing similarities with President Obama's US high speed rail network idea today - although I'm not sure that will see the light of day anytime soon.

We went up just before dusk and stayed until well after dark, enjoying the ever changing views. There was also a thunderstorm complete with amazing lightning to take in, at which point we were even ushered off the topmost deck for safety reasons.

You can check google images for examples of the other views we got today.
It was an awe-inspiring sight and a total contrast to the noise and commotion on the streets below.
