Relationship

DEFINITIONS OF RELATIONSHIPS in The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology, 1985

Relationship, primary
In interpersonal relations, a basic, long-lasting relationship founded upon strong emotional ties and a sense of commitment to the other person. Unlike secondary relationships, they tend to be rather diffuse, covering a variety of roles, behaviors and situations; they are generally not bounded by static rules of interaction and the persons involved generally know each other extremely well. Primary relationships are such that one member cannot simply replace the other with a new person.

Relationship, secondary
In interpersonal relations, a relatively short-lived relationship between persons characterized by limited interaction, rather clear rules for relating and fairly well-defined social rules. Unlike a primary relationship, they rarely have much in the way of emotional involvement and the members in the relationship can rather easily be replaced.
