Life through the Lens

Little kids are my favorite because they are so self absorbed in their own worlds that they don't care about what anyone else might think. I also generally like people who are good with kids since you need to have a certain degree of selflessness to let someone half your age and size dictate playtime. Being a camp counselor was honestly one of my favorite jobs. It's only with kids that you can suggest things like backwards dinner, 80's workout rave (with youtube exercise clips standing in as instructors) and "hey let's replace all the names in the harry potter puppet pals with our own" and be taken completely seriously.

It's also the best feeling ever when your kids actually listen to you. All throughout high school my best friend and I used to volunteer with kids in Detroit. Some of them were straight up crazy. Like this one girl took this other volunteer's water bottle and flushed it in a public bathroom while convincing the rest of her class to join in. And another started biting people with her golden tooth. Somehow these ones were always my favorite. And somehow they would always listen to us. It's not like we were changing their moral make up or anything. We were definitely far from creating poster children who had been changed by good role models. It was more of the feeling of being able to relate to them that was nice. That at that particular time there was still something accessible. It's not for long that people are that open. I think it's true that the older you get the more careful you are about who you share things with.
