Summer cottage

After yesterday evening's eventful journey, the first thing we had to take care of this morning was getting another spare tire for the camper, so while Roger was doing that, Philip and I did the washing up, had showers and then relaxed in the sun until Roger came back. Then we took the ferry across to Kelley's Island. Kelleys Island is approximately twelve miles from Sandusky, Ohio, and four miles due north of the Marblehead Peninsula. It has a year-round population of 367, which swells  to 1300 from June to August. We took our bikes with us for getting around the island, but probably the most popular means of transport is golf carts, which you can rent near the dock. Our first stop was to get a bite to eat, then we set off cycling around the island. Probably the most famous landmark on the island are the Glacial Grooves. The Glacial Grooves on the north side of Kelleys Island are the largest easily accessible such grooves in the world. They were scoured into solid limestone bedrock about 18,000 years ago by the great ice sheet which covered part of North America. Hundreds of feet thick, it flowed from the north into what is now the Lake Erie basin.What you can see today is a trough, 400-feet long, 35-feet wide, and up to 10-feet deep. They were formerly much more extensive, but unfortunately much of it was destroyed by quarrying which used to be a major occupation on the island. Having completed our tour of the island, we treated ourselves to an ice cream, before returning to the ferry. I chose for my blip today this delightful, restored summer cottage which we passed on the coastal road.
