Right and Left of Us They Towered

Beyond the green swelling hills of the Mittel Land rose mighty slopes of forest up to the lofty steeps of the Carpathians themselves. Right and left of us they towered, with the afternoon sun falling full upon them and bringing out all the glorious colours of this beautiful range, deep blue and purple in the shadows of the peaks, green and brown where grass and rock mingled, and an endless perspective of jagged rock and pointed crags, till these were themselves lost in the distance, where the snowy peaks rose grandly.

Bram Stoker's Dracula

Today was not a one-shot day - but this is as taken and unaltered. My wife and I have had the day to ourselves, and following a jaunt to Flat Rock with its amazing vista - en route to where we saw a large flock of Black Cockatoos overhead (they are very very different in behaviour and sound to the sulphur-cresteds) - we had lunch at the Conservation Hut in Wentworth Falls. Despite the whinging negative Nigels at the table next to us, we thought the food was beautiful, and the view outstanding.

After lunch, short bush walks afforded lovely blippable views - from Breakfast Point, Lyrebird Lookout, and Queen Victoria Lookout. There's still a lot left to look at around there: Lodore Falls, Empress Falls, and a long stroll along the National Pass Track, which appears to go along the base of the cliffs I was looking down from.

Here it be larger.

I've put a few other photos in a Picasa album
