I am about to go out, and I will be away until early evening. Before I can take the car out onto the street, I have to call Jess in from the garden and shut the door behind her. She's not daft - she knows I must be going somewhere which means that she & Molly will be left on guard duty.

I think that Jess is trying to make the point that I had not discussed my movements with her. She thinks that I should have applied for permission to leave the house.
