One daze at a time...

Baroque the casbah

Today Pépé and I went to see Purcell's Dido and Aeneas as part of the Corpo's free lunchtime operas in August.

I loved it.

The average age in the audience was 72 and I had a brilliant time.
There was a lot of giddiness and a very touching, very real sense of expectation.
Egg sandwich specialists with at least five decades of egg sandwich making experience under their belt.
Flasks of tea and digestive biscuits.
Foldable chairs and indomitable spirits.
Hearing aids and fine-tuned ears.
Rain gear and pillows for the bums.

Pépé applauded loudly after the first singer did his sound check.
Then he sang (quite loudly) every line during Dido's warm up.
I was convinced that we would get kicked out.
But he was on his best behaviour for the performance proper.

Dido and Aeneas is my favourite opera. And this little lunchtime production was the contrary of disappointing.
Thank you Dublin Corpo! (Have I just written that?!?!)

My initial title for today's blip was Dildo and Hyenas, so I must must have got classy overnight.
