In The Soloist, a journalist finds a violin player on the streets of Los Angeles beneath a status of Beethoven, producing beautiful music on his violin which has two strings missing. The homeless soloist becomes the subject of his coloumn for weeks to come and the duo form an uncanny friendship and develop great respect for one another. The violinist, a Julliard dropout, is schizophrenic and the writer tries to cure him. But as events, some among them unpleasant, unfold, he understands what it is to be a friend. This quote comes to mind.
