Norbiton Station

This very pleasing station in South West London suburbia was built by the London and South Western Railway.

Norbiton is on the loop line to the old coaching town of Kingston-upon-Thames.
Coaching interests in Kingston were opposed to having a railway and the London and South Western Railway built the Southampton main-line further south through Surbiton.

This opposition continued even during the laying of the line from Twickenham although this line did reach a terminus in Kingston in 1863. In 1869 the line was extended through Norbiton to connect to the Southampton main line near the present New Malden station.

Queen Victoria visited Coombe Hill and the royal train stopped at Norbiton. Even more impressively Norbiton station appears in the opening shot of the renowned sitcom "The Fall and Rise of Reggie Perrin."
