Curvaceous Grandeur

The unmistakable Carlton Terrace.

I try to vary my ride into work a bit from day to day and have been wanting to zip along Carlton Terrace for a while to try to capture some of it's granduer. It is beautifully built in a sweeping curve with skill far beyond that of modern day builders.

I live in a crescent too. Not as grand as this and it curves the other way. You don't really appreciate the quality of craftsmanship that went into these until you have been inside a few. Every inch of the space inside the curve is used efficiently. Rooms are still proportioned correctly but one end is that little bit narrower than the other, or some space is taken in a cupboard here or a side room there. Quite incredible.

But then again, what do you expect from William Henry Playfair?

I can almost imagine Arthur Conan Doyle walking these very streets thinking up escapades for his hero Sherlock Holmes and ver faithful sidekick Dr Watson.

Thinking of interesting buildings to blip in future. Hmmmm, the game is afoot!
