Spires of York

We stopped off for the day in York on our way north. It has been bright blustery and cold with some quite heavy showers including hail!!!

We had intended visiting the Merchant Adventurers Hall but it was closed for a private function so after climbing Clifford's Tower (from where I took this picture) we went to Fairfax House which is a beautifully restored Georgian House furnished from the Terry collection. (You can see it at the bottom of the picture - the red and white building.) It is quite remarkable as the rooms which now recreate this georgian home were part of the entrance to a cinema and a dance hall pre 1980 when the York civic trust took it over, rebuilding walls which had been demolished and restoring original stucco ceilings that had been plastered over.
A bonus was a display of 18th century costumes straight out of Jane Austin!
I had a good day as I also got a visit to the Quilting Museum. Excellent.

This view shows the Minster in the far distance and the spires of St Mary's Church in the foreground which is right next to Jorvik - the viking experience. Between the two is the unusual tower of All Saints Church which is illiminated at night.

With a walk around the walls and an excellent meal in a fish restaurant tonight we have had a good day despite the weather
