Rodents rule

Bad, bad place for an eye to be

This fiddler crab might think it's hiding, but I'm a little worried about its tactics!

F and I had a wondrous day on Cape Cod. After it rained all morning, we had a fine pancake breakfast in a Provincetown diner, followed by a walk among the larks and gulls on a stone walkway that jutted out into the ocean. We drove down to Wellfleet, where we met the crabs on the Great Island Trail. Here's some info on the trail:

This is the one of the most fascinating hikes on Cape Cod. The trail follows a saltwater marsh across a dike of sand that transformed Great Island into a peninsula. Great Island is wild and windswept, with a small stunted pine forest, vast bearberry and lichen-covered dunes, and miles of sandy beach that narrow to Jeremy Point, pointing a bony finger toward Brewster. It was into this bay that the Pilgrims sailed on their second exploration. Later, whalers congregated on Great Island ?in fact, some say the name Wellfleet came from the term ?Whale Fleet.? This trail leads to the site of a whaler?s tavern and is one of many options that explore the island.

We met the wee crabs on the saltwater marsh when the tide went out. The grass under our feet was teeming with the little critters (they're only an inch long). They disappear into holes in the sand after a while!

We also saw a turkey vulture snack on an eider duck. I caught a picture of him flying.
