Sgwarnog: In the Field

Great Ball of Fire

After a more subdued sunrise earlier in the month, I've finally gone for the jugular with this gaudy monstrosity.

At this time of the year it's easy to get a bit obsessed with watching the sunrise, as it happens in the period between waking and leaving the house for work. There is an art in keeping a weather eye on the window between breakfasting the kids, hopping in and out of the shower and assembling belongings.

On stormy days, it's that ten minutes between the sun rising and it disappearing above the cloud layer that provides the nicest effects, and today the rain provided a filter, making a shot of the full sun more possible. As I've mentioned before, I do get a bit frustrated that our view to the east is cut by telephone wires, so I have to try to get a reasonable angle above, through and between. This tends to lead to a close zoom shot, rather than a full expanse of spectacular sky. Today I've settled on one that is focused more on the architecture of my neighbours' roofs, rather than a sharp skyline, although you can still pick out St. Margaret's, Horsforth, and a power station stack plume. Usually these chimney pots would be adorned with some combination of dove, pigeon, crow, starling or gull, but at this moment they were bare.
