Remnants

Early this evening we had the opportunity to go onto the St Luke's land.

You first saw our farewell to the gracious old building of St Lukes back in April.

Then there was the deconstruction in July.

Now there is a stark space of land with a bit of rubble and some salvaged building materials awaiting removal for storage.

It's strange to stand and clearly see cleared land while the mental image in your mind traces the form no longer there.

It was both perishingly cold and special to be there. Today is the feast day of St Luke. We left some hardy pot plants and remembered those who 152 years ago today, walked across the city from St Michael's (wooden and still standing) to place a foundation stone north of the Avon River on the church reserve, corner of Manchester and Kilmore Streets.

Like the rest of Christchurch (well, all of us really), we don't know what the future holds or how damaged the land is. We know our neighbours and those in the Peterborough St part of town miss us and would like to see us back on the land in some form. That's a humbling and special thing to have people outside of the church say.

Then home to warm up followed by a good catch up on the phone with Mum.

It was a big day Mum and Dad, sleep well :-)
