Royal Rat Run

Forgive the alliteration.

No Windsors being whisked away these alleyways.

The Royal Mile is festooned with "closes"; little alleyways that stretch off either side down to streets far below.

8:20 am this morning and Edinburghers are scurrying on foot up alleyways that lead from the train station. All hurrying to open the tourist shops or get to the council buildings on the Mile.

Being early out the house this morning I stopped by on the bike for a bit of blipping before zooming off down to Leith. Luckily a bit warmer today after the freezing cold of the past two days. Fingers crossed for the weekend.

(Google maps link to where this is)

PostBlip: This is Fleshmarket Close, so named after a meat market that was held here with the alleyway running down to a slaughterhouse at the end of Nor' Loch (later drained to become Princes Street Gardens).

I guess that was one way to guarantee your meat was fresh before the days of refrigeration.
