Signs of old age

I rather like this old building tucked behind the National Museum of Scotland. Its old lettering still clings to the stone defiantly, helped by its protected location. It's a hint of a bygone age, even in an ancient city like Edinburgh.

You can see the ghosts of long-gone shop fronts throughout town by looking closely above the doorways for hints of old signage. Purveyors, tailors and grocers all painted their names onto the stone. I can't imagine that would be allowed these days.

It ties in quite nicely with our trip to the cinema tonight to see Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris whose theme is contemporary life dipping into the past.
