Ghostsign - Peterkin

This sign is at the corner of Sangora Road and St John's Hill, Clapham. There used to be a flour mill in Battersea called Peterkins and the custard powder, self-raising flour and cornflour were part of their product range.

Peterkin was owned by Joseph Arthur Rank, not best known for his flour milling but later for his film venture, J Arthur Rank. (Cue man hitting large gong!). Anyway, Peterkins ddn't last too long and he had to go back to work with his dad who was also a miller. A rather more successful one since his company finally grew and merged with others to become Rank Hovis MacDougall.

Peterkins ran into trouble for their slogan, "Eggs is Eggs and so is Peterkins Custard". Unfortunately if contained just 4% dried egg and the rest was maize flour. But when it went to the court they won, mainly because the judge decreed that quite honestly, for what the public was paying, they couldn't really expect any better!
