This is architecture

Today I visited Aberdeen University's new library, designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen, who were also responsible for the Royal Copenhagen Library - the Black Diamond.

I think this is Aberdeen's signature piece of new architecture. It is an elegantly glazed cube from the outside, but the inside is stunning, with a cut out ovoid in each floor that moves along a shifting axis as you rise up through the floors, as this picture shows. It is hypnotic and constantly changing with surfaces and detailing that are just perfect. £57m worth of perfect.

It is open to the public - go and have a coffee in the Hardback Cafe.
