Avon Gorge

After a morning watching Tintin 3D and buying presents for the birthday of Mrs Running Backwards, Son #1 and #2 and myself made a slight detour to the Avon Gorge.

This is a view downstream towards Avonmouth and shows the Portway (main road), one railway (to Severn Beach) and an obscured railway to Portishead (under the cover of the trees on the far bank).

We take Avon Gorge somewhat for granted in Bristol but it's impressive in lots of ways - the Clifton Suspension Bridge, two unique species of trees and the phrase, 'Shipshape and Bristol Fashion' all come from the Gorge.

It's overlooked by Iron Age hill forts and the Clifton Observatory.

This picture is bisected by the guard rail which kind of throws the rule of thirds out of the window but there you go. I kept my shadow in for no particular reason....!

Viewing large will may reveal the cranes in Avonmouth, Portishead and a glimpse of the Welsh coast opposite.

We enjoyed Tintin - it's had some mixed reviews but it's very clever, a bit of a ripping yarn and Captain Haddock is great! Son #1, who is quite into his Tintin was impressed but it may have been the massively overpriced popcorn that kept him happy!

Half term has flown by...

Christmas is premature again!
