Lone figure at Vindolanda

Not many people visiting the Vindolanda Roman Fort today. Half term is over and digging has stopped for the year.

Two men were busy but they were renovating walls with lime mortar. The weather this summer prevented them from finishing on time.

I was at the site with friends D and J from Southampton. We enjoyed the museum greatly, especially the Roman tablets. After looking round we went for a cup of tea but the cafe had closed 45 mins before the museum. There was no flexibility either. They explained that they had to clean the coffee machine and always closed at this time. Then the lady on the desk explained they needed to get people back across the site before it was dark.........but the museum stays open until 5pm. D suggested it was a bit like hitting one's head against a brick wall. Last time I was an Vindolanda we had soup and it was horrible, to the cafe now has gone down in my estimation further. (Rant over.)
