Saved by a wolf

Legend has it that in the 9th century a howling wolf saved the town of Stirling from a Danish attack.

The story goes that the Vikings were sneaking up on the Stirling castle and the guard had fallen asleep.

But a wolf on the crag started howling and alerted the sentry of the approaching danger.
The Danish attack was thwarted- thanks to the wolf's warning.
In gratitude, the symbol of the wolf is commemorated on the burgh coat of arms.

Now the Council is looking for a motto to go on the Coat of Arms, something that sums up this newly created city:
"Stirling: Scotland's heart."

A group of local historians and writers have drawn up a shortlist and any day now we will be invited to vote.

Other areas of Scotland have already got mottos.

Aberdeen's motto is:"Bon Accord"
Edinburgh: "Nisi Dominus Frustra" and East Ayrshire- "Forward Together".
