Mount Cook

Wow! Driving up to the Southern Alps we passed glacial lakes with bright blue and turquoise waters. This isn't much like Scotland after all! We found our DOC campsite at the base of the mountains, with a fantastic view of snow covered peaks. The clouds cleared from the sky over the course of the afternoon and the stars at night were breathtaking. It was also very, very cold!

We arrived after the sun had disappeared behind the mountain and quickly pitched our tent and got the cooking stove going for a full english! We put on as many clothes as possible but it was freezing in the tent. I had icebreaker thermals, trousers, a t-shirt, 2 hoodies and a fleece on and 3 pairs of socks and I was frozen inside my sleeping bag. We didn't get much sleep but the views were worth it in the morning.
