Rain and floods

I woke this morning to some of the most impressive thunder and lightening I've heard in a while. The rain matched it in ferocity. I think much of New Zealand has had some pretty shocking weather today. We have roads closed (inlcuding the Buller Gorge) and the risk of some housing having to be evacuated.

After work Kiwilizzie suggested we take a drive up to Maruia falls to see how they were looking. The answer to that is horrendous. The amount of water passing over the falls was hard to comprehend (see Kiwilizzie's blip) and I just couldn't seem to get a photo that did it justice.

On our way home we decided to duck down to the Rock Snot Cafe to see how the Buller River was faring there. This capture shows the rocks on the right that the locals jump and dive off.

In this blip from a week ago you can see how tall the rocks are as C jumps off. The rock behind him is completely covered in today's blip.

This capture of the rocks one evening shows the tallest one that you can see just peeping out of today's floodwaters.
