Gloucester Road

This is Gloucester Road Station on the London Underground. It was built as Brompton (Gloucester Road) Station by the Metropolitan Railway and opened on October 1st 1868. At this time, most of the land in this area was used for horticulture, but the arrival of the underground was soon followed by housing.

A complex history of expansion and alteration followed over a century, and the most recent change was the construction of a shopping mall and a block of flats over the platforms.

In 1957, a Polish Countess was fatally stabbed on the Piccadilly Line platform, and her attacker escaped, never to be found.

In 2010, nearly fourteen and a half million passengers passed through Gloucester Road station, with less dramatic consequences than the unfortunate Countess Lubienska.
