King Haakon Bay

Landfall South Georgia.

After about 72 hours at sea it was good to finally see South Georgia. Our first stop (and our only stop on the south coast) is in King Haakon Bay.

We were dropping off a big group of ski mountaineers who are planning to repeat the trek across South Georgia that Ernest Shackleton did in 1916. The weather as we dropped them off was getting very unpleasant - and I was pleased to be getting a warm meal and a comfortable bed on Plancius rather a cold damp wind-blown tent.

There was an outside chance that the other 70 passengers on the boat might get a landing opportunity, but the crew view was that if we did this there was a real chance that we'd get stuck ashore and end up joining the skiers for the night.
