Water Newton Church across the meadows

An ordinary sort of day, broken by an afternoon walk around the former flood meadows that lie between Castor and Water Newton. There was some protection from the lazy wind, thanks to all the riverside trees, but it was still very nippy in more exposed areas, and there was quite a lot of ice on the slack water of the river.

Water Newton is a very small village set on the south bank of the River Nene. It's close to the old Roman town of Durobrivae, well known for its pottery, and a Roman military garrison was stationed here. The church of St.Remigius has walls of rubble with stone dressings and the roofs are covered with stone-slates and lead.

The church is mentioned in the Domesday Survey (1086), and numerous 12th-century stones have been re-used or built into the later walls, but nothing of this date remains in situ. Most of the structure dates from the 13th and 14th centuries, but it was extensively restored in the late 19th century.

PS If you look at it in large, you may just be able to spot a heron lurking in the riverside vegetation - I've only just seen it!
