Stourhead Solstice

The Southern Solstice occured at 0530 hr on this day, when the sun was directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. The sun's ingress into the sign (not the constellation) of Capricorn signals the presence of the shortest day. Although the solstice is, strictly speaking, only that fleeting moment the whole day is generally described by that term, with especial significance being given to the sunrise and sunset. Celebrations take place at local Wiltshire sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury and Alton Barnes, where the chalk white horse is illuminated by candles as night falls.

The Spotlight Kid and I were at Stourhead and made a tour around the lake. Stourhead currently looks very different from how it was in the autumn but sadly there was no spectacular sunset, as you can see from the picture below taken at the local sunset time of 1600 hr.

Good news for photographers is that the days begin to get longer from now on.
