Papa Kirihimete (Maori for Father Christmas)

Merry Christmas from New Zealand (Aotearoa). We'll be the first country in the world to celebrate Christmas, and this is the first year I've seen a Maori Father Christmas, complete with flax piupiu (skirt), tattoos, headband (tipare - North Island kopare South Island), greenstone (jade) tiki and Maori symbols, and weapon of some sort - not quite sure how the weapon fits into Christmas!

He is top of my daughter's Christmas tree - we made it out of Christchurch to Wellington and we are looking forward to an earthquake free Christmas, but feeling so sorry for the poor people who are back where they started with ruined homes and gardens. There was one big quake before we left, but the airport wasn't closed thank goodness and our flight left more or less on time, full of people whose flights didn't go yesterday.
