Puzzles old and new

The household is in a bit of an upset at the moment. Father-in-law started complaining about his back just before Christmas. Attention-seeking git I cruelly thought to myself but even Mrs P thought he was overdoing it and muttered about low pain threshold. He was taken into Raigmore hospital a couple of days ago in the middle of the night. It seems he has a cracked/broken bone in his lower spine. It looks like he may be in a few days whilst they decide what to do but it sounds like a lot of physio and managed pain relief. And coughing is agony and seemingly is a common cause. Mother-in-law is staying with us as she can't really be safely left alone and it makes visiting easier. She's not much of a TV watcher but likes her puzzles so we had to get her a P&J - she only looks at the puzzles. She's nearly 90 so getting on. I'm doing today's Telegraph prize cryptic on an iPad but ground to a halt; unless inspiration comes this is as far as I can get. Mrs P has another week off work but what will happen after that we'll have to wait and see.

PS: Added later. We were just about to go to bed sitting in front of the fire when mother-in-law came out of a doze and looked around very puzzled. "Where's Tom?" After a lot of prompting she remembered him being taken off in the ambulance but not having been to see him in hospital, or what was wrong with him, or being brought to our house by one of her sons. As Mrs P said you don't know whether to laugh or weep.
