Tales from St Ives

Returning home

Spent the rest of the afternoon & early evening at the boathouse after launching the St Ives lifeboat The Princess Royal to what turned out to be 2 incidents in one shout.

First we went out at 3:30 this afternoon to a 10 meter boat broken down about 3 miles north of St Ives. When we got there they had managed to get fuel flowing again, but to be on the safe side the lifeboat stayed with them for the next half hour as the made their way south west. About a half hour later, just as the decision was being made whether to leave them to it & turn for home, the Coastguard had a call from a small fishing boat about 500m off Pendeen which had run out of fuel, so the lifeboat was tasked to head off to assist them instead. As we were already half way there it was only 15-20 minutes before the lifeboat was fixing a tow line to the fishing boat, before towing her back to St Ives in the dark.

It was about 6:30 when they got back. Unfortunately the crew couldn't go straight home as they had to wait for an hour for the tide to drop so that they could recover the lifeboat to the boathouse. A successful night though, everyone back home safe & sound
