Culture flask

Today has been a day i've been dreading...wisdom tooth out at the dentist! But before all the pushing, grinding and pain started I had a few things to do in the lab.

At this time of year the sun rising over Fife shines straight in to our lab's cell culture room. Here is a flask of growing unicellular dictysotelium cells, silhouetted in the rising sun. We grow cells in a nutrient broth in a shaking flask, before we artificially starve the cells (by washing out the broth) then development into it's multicellular stage can begin.
