A Collector of Oddities

Filamental

I got more than I bargained for when I opened the lid of the worm composter to put some food scraps in today. There was an impressive group of this filamentous fungi Pilobolus growing in there.

The little black bits contain the spores which the fungus explosively releases, leading to the rather charming common name of Hat Thrower fungus.
It is often found growing in animal dung as the spores adhere to vegetation which is then eaten by the animal and passes through its digestive system where is can then grow happily in its own compost.
