Our life in the Borders

Sheep, wood and wind

A crisp and mainly sunny day today. We explored around little roads in the Peebles area. I wanted to be able to take a shot that would do justice to the sunny valley foreground, with the snow covered Borders hills in the background. It proved surprising difficult - such a large landscape to compress into a little photo.

On studying this photo, I realise that it summarises the Borders' none too vibrant economy. In the left corner there is a scattering of sheep, whose wool used to feed the the now empty tweed mills that lined the Tweed valley. On the hillside there are the Forestry Commission plantations. Timber lorries regularly roll along narrow roads, and people flock in to use the Forest Parks. On the hilltop is the still expanding windfarm - energy for the future.
